A Month of Gratitude for Military Families: Ways to Celebrate Military Family Month

When it comes to military service, it impacts more than just those who serve. It also impacts their family. In recognition of their sacrifice, November is Military Family Month, and we think it’s a good reminder to honor the families that are the primary support for our service members. From frequent moves to often demanding deployments, military life asks much of service members and their families. We see the challenges military families face and honor their countless contributions. If, like everyone at Freedom Square, you believe celebrating military families and showing your appreciation is important here are some examples of simple gestures, on up to larger-scale events, you can do to help celebrate Military Family Month.
Shop at Veteran-Owned Businesses
One direct way to support military families is by choosing to shop at or hire veteran-owned businesses. In fact, you may be surprised how many local businesses are owned by veterans. You can trust they will apply the discipline, commitment and follow-through they learned while serving our county. In many cases, they’re using the technological, organizational and leaderships skills they learned while serving. To help you find local businesses owned by veterans, check out these websites by the Seminole County Chamber or VeteranOwnedBusiness.com. You’ll find everything from schools, daycares, digital technology assistance, construction, pool care, photography, printing and much, much more.
Help Military Families by Supporting Veterans
You can also celebrate Military Family Month by supporting charities that support, train and provide assistance to veterans. To do this, consider fundraising or making a contribution to veterans’ charities:
- Wounded Warrior Project: They offer direct programs in mental health, career counseling and long-term rehabilitative care, along with their ongoing advocacy efforts, to improve the lives of millions of warriors and their families.
- Hope for the Warriors: Hope for the Warriors provides comprehensive support programs for service members, veterans and military families that are focused on transitioning back to civilian life, health and wellness, peer engagement and getting them connected to community resources.
- Fisher House Foundation: Fisher House Foundation builds comfort homes at military and VA medical centers around the world where the families of active military and veterans can stay free of charge while a loved one is in the hospital.
- Operation Homefront: Their mission is to build strong, stable and secure military families so they’re able to thrive in the communities they have worked so hard to protect.
This is just a partial list, so feel free to look for veterans’ charities and other organizations in your area.
